
His Excellency the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Francisco da Costa Monteiro, met with His Excellency Ambassador Amarjit Singh Sarjit Singh of Malaysia to Timor-Leste and representatives from Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), led by Mr. Jeremy Wong, Vice President of Subsurface & Development, to explore potential cooperation in the energy sector in Timor-Leste.
Minister Monteiro welcomed PETROS’ interest and provided an overview of the Governmentβs strategy to develop the oil and gas sector through upstream exploration and downstream industrialisation. His Excellency highlighted Timor-Lesteβs commitment to building enabling infrastructure that supports investment in refining, LNG, methanol, and helium, etc., in southern coast and encouraged partnerships that could bring technical expertise and long-term value.
The Minister also briefed the delegation on the outcomes of the Concept Select Study for the Greater Sunrise project, confirming that the Timor-Leste LNG (TLNG) option is technically viable and remains the most commercially viable development pathway. His Excellency reaffirmed the Governmentβs commitment to pursuing this option as a cornerstone of Timor-Lesteβs future energy strategy.
Mr. Jeremy Wong introduced PETROS as a state-owned company established by the Government of Sarawak in 2017. He shared insights into the companyβs rapid growth, outlining Sarawakβs integrated gas roadmap and infrastructure-led approach to industrial development. PETROS emphasized its interest in learning more about Timor-Lesteβs regulatory and investment environment and exploring collaboration through its partnerships and technical capabilities.
Both sides acknowledged the potential for future cooperation and agreed to continue engagement to identify concrete areas of collaboration.
